Review: An Abundance of Katherines by John Green

Usually my YA reviews go on Emma’s site Book Angel Booktopia but this one was read as a bit of light relief post-Franzen and during the neverending Luminaries. An Abundance of Katherines is great. I’d be lying if I said it was of The Fault in Our Stars quality but then very few books are I guess.

A summary from the publishers:

When it comes to relationships, Colin Singleton’s type happens to be girls named Katherine. And when it comes to girls named Katherine, Colin is always getting dumped. Nineteen times, to be exact. He’s also a washed-up child prodigy with ten thousand dollars in his pocket, a passion for anagrams, and an overweight, Judge Judy-obsessed best friend. Colin’s on a mission to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which will predict the future of all relationships, transform him from a fading prodigy into a true genius, and finally win him the girl.

Letting expectations go and allowing love in are at the heart of Colin’s hilarious quest to find his missing piece and avenge dumpees everywhere.

The plot of An Abundance of Katherines is obvious. From almost the first page I was pretty convinced what would happen but that was hardly the point. What made this book entertaining throughout was Green’s characters. He’s just good at getting people right.

Colin seemed like a real-life believable Napoleon Dynamite, if that’s even possible, and that teamed with a less than usual American-Arab character is just brilliant. Colin and Hassan are unlikely best friends and the pairing works so well – I could almost see them as a movie duo and imagine if An Abundance of Katherines were made into a film it would be amazing if taken on by John Reitman of Juno fame.

Anyway, An Abundance of Katherines provided just the right amount of simple reading pleasure I was looking for and it’s another great read by John Green. I keep seeing his boxset collection and am so sorely tempted to get it – if only The Book People picked it up!
